Earth Science Picture of the Day: Cap Coz Mirage_

Today's Earth Science Picture of the Day.  The above mirage sequence was taken on January 29, 2005 from Cap Coz, Bretagne, France. To capture this phenomenon, a series of pictures was made at slightly different elevations Notice that the remote "Pointe de Trévignon" (about 15 km or 9 miles away) seems to float above the sea. The refracted image is above its true position, so this is a superior mirage. For such a mirage to be observed, warm air must overly a shallow layer of colder air (an inversion).
